Black fungus, also known as Mucormycosis, is an opportunistic fungal infection which infects tissues like nose, paranasal sinuses, eye and sometimes even brain.
The symptoms of black fungus range from loss of sensation in the cheek area to facial pain, facial fullness, facial swelling, nasal obstruction, nasal discharge ( purulent, blackish or blood tinged), palate ulcer, eye swelling, decreased eye movements or decreased vision and even headache.
Black fungus, if not treated can be fatal. The earlier it is diagnosed, the better are the patient outcomes. As the spread of the fungus is very fast, early diagnosis and treatment are of utmost importance.
The patients who are at most risk for this infection are the ones who have a compromised immunity. These days, it is being commonly seen after covid infection, specially in patients who have a history of steroid intake with or without deranged blood sugars.
The most important precaution that can be taken to avoid the infection is to avoid self medication and irrational use of steroids. Secondly, diabetic patients must take their diabetes medications properly and keep their sugars in check.
The treatment for black fungus is a multidisciplinary approach. It includes surgical removal( debridement) of the involved tissue and then giving medications. The medications can be given intravenously or orally.
Black fungus is not a death sentence. If diagnosed early, there is definite treatment with good patient outcomes. Early screening and surveillance is the need of the hour.
